Brief History
Our Journey
In the year 2003, the Government of the Republic of Zambia entered into a bilateral agreement with the People's Republic of China for construction of power generating stations to mitigate the power deficit the country was faced with. The agreement resulted in signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ZESCO Limited and Sinohydro of China for construction of an additional 360MW of generating capacity at Kariba North Bank Power Station.
Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation Limited (KNBEPC) was established to oversee the development of the Kariba North Bank Extension power plant and was subsequently retained to manage its operations post-construction. Incorporated in 2007 by ZESCO Limited, KNBEPC is a wholly owned subsidiary of ZESCO Limited.
KNBEPC Limited was incorporated in 2007 as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for purposes of developing the 2 X 180MW Kariba North Bank Extension Power Station. Upon the completion of the KNBE Project in July 2014, the company changed its model of operation from SPV to an investment entity of the holding company, ZESCO Limited in 2021.
KNBEPC has successfully developed and commissioned the Chisamba 100MW Solar PV Plant located in Kafungalubala Village in Senior Chief Chamuka's area in Chisamba District, Central Province. The USD 101 million project was completed in June this year and the plant is now fully operational.
