Kariba North Bank Extension (KNBE) In the year 2003, the Government of the of the Republic of Zambian entered into a bilateral agreement with the People’s Republic of China for construction of power generating stations to mitigate the power deficit the country was faced with. The agreement resulted in signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ZESCO Limited and Sinohydro of China for construction of an additional 360MW of generating capacity at Kariba North Bank Power Station.
Kariba North Bank Extension (KNBE) was established as a Special Purpose Vehicle Company. The company, wholly owned by ZESCO Limited, was registered in 2007 for purposes of developing the 2 X 180MW Kariba North Bank Extension Power Station.
The construction of the 360 MW KNBE hydropower station began in 2008, and commercial operations started in 2014.
