1.0 INTRODUCTION
Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation (KNBEPC) Limited is a wholly
owned subsidiary of ZESCO Limited incorporated in 2007. KNBEPC Limited is a
separate legal entity engaged in power generation and mandated to operate a
360MW power plant located in Siavonga.
2.0 BACKGROUND AND SCOPE OF WORKS
The Generating Station has 02 units rated at 180MW each. According to the
Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (OEM) recommendations, the generating
units must prior to the 10 yearly Overhaul, undergo a mandatory unit inspection
with reference to latest engineering practice. Generating units 5 and 6 were
synchronized to the grid in Quarter 4 of 2013 and Quarter 1 of 2014
respectively.
Periodically, hydroelectric generators require a major overhaul, for operational
reliability such that the generating units of the hydro power stations shall be
available whenever the grid demands. The extent of the work required during
an overhaul will depend a great deal on operating conditions such as water
quality, loading pattern of the unit and wear and tear. For the overhaul to
proceed and to accomplish all the work required, planning should begin well
before the overhaul hence the requirement for inspection to enable prepare for
the overhaul. The mandatory equipment inspection comes with spares such as
gaskets/seals, as replacement parts during the inspection due to the damage
arising from the activity.
The brief scope includes among other works, but, not limited to the following
arears:
Generator Inspection;
Turbine Inspection;
Water way Inspection (Penstock, Draft Tube, Tail race); and
